Microsoft is reportedly close to investing $10 billion into the chatbot startup OpenAI, according to TechCrunch. The deal would value OpenAI at around $4 billion and give Microsoft a majority stake in the company.
OpenAI was founded by SpaceX co-founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, along with several others, in 2015 with the goal of building artificial intelligence that is beneficial to humanity. The company has made significant progress towards that goal, and its chatbot successes have attracted the attention of major tech companies like Microsoft.
If the deal goes through, it would be the largest investment by a tech company into an artificial intelligence company. It would also give Microsoft a leg up in the chatbot race, as OpenAI chatbots are some of the most advanced in the world.
The investment would reportedly give Microsoft access to OpenAI’s patents and technology, as well as the talent of its approximately 100 employees. OpenAI would continue to operate independently, though, andits co-founders would keep their stakes in the company.
The deal is not yet final, but it is reportedly close to completion. It is not clear when it might be announced.
