It’s been more than six years since Blizzard Entertainment released Diablo 3, and fans of the dungeon crawling series are eagerly anticipating the next installment. Here’s everything we know about Diablo 4 so far.

Release date:

Although Blizzard has not announced an official release date for Diablo 4, the game is probably still a few years away. The developer usually takes its time between Diablo games, with a roughly five to six year gap between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, so we wouldn’t expect to see Diablo 4 before 2019 at the earliest.

Platforms:

There’s no word yet on which platforms Diablo 4 will be released for, but it’s a safe bet that it will come to PC. The first three Diablo games were all PC exclusives, after all. However, considering that Blizzard’s other major franchises, such as Overwatch and World of Warcraft, are now available on consoles, it’s possible that Diablo 4 could also come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Gameplay:

Details on Diablo 4’s gameplay are scarce, but we do know that the game will be a return to the series’ roots. In an interview with Polygon, BlizzCon 2018 attendees were told that Diablo 4 would be a “gritty and dark” game, with a more mature tone than previous installments.

This ties in with what we’ve heard from Blizzard employees in the past. In 2016, then-game director Josh Mosqueira said that the team was “going back to the roots of what Diablo is,” while senior producer Alex Mayberry promised a “very dark” game with a “heavily Gothic” setting.

We also know that Diablo 4 will feature a shared world, similar to games like Destiny and The Division. This means that players will be able to encounter other players while exploring the game’s world, and it sounds like there will be opportunities for cooperation as well as competition.

It’s worth noting that, while Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 is in development, the game has not been officially announced. This means that everything we know about the game so far is subject to change.
